Hillsgrove Clubhouse

For adults living with mental illness seeking fellowship, wellness and vocational development in a supportive community setting.

Established in 1991, Thrive’s Hillsgrove Clubhouse is Rhode Island's first certified Clubhouse. It is a healthy and restorative community for adults living with mental illness to develop a fulfilling, rewarding, and productive lifestyle.

The clubhouse model originated in New York City in 1948 with the founding of Fountain House. It is recognized as an evidence-based practice by the Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration of the National Institute of Mental Health.

Hillsgrove Clubhouse is a restorative environment where individuals impacted socially and vocationally by mental illness can recover and thrive. Hillsgrove promotes the concept of membership and encourages empowerment and self-determination among its members.

Through the clubhouse environment, individuals are helped to achieve or regain the confidence and skills necessary to lead vocationally productive and socially satisfying lives. Members are given opportunities to gain skills, grow confidence, and develop social abilities to function independently. Hillsgrove Clubhouse focuses on the strengths of each member, helping them realize their potential to be successful and confident members of the community. Members are guaranteed:

  • A place to belong
  • A right to return
  • The opportunity to develop meaningful relationships
  • The opportunity for meaningful work

Hillsgrove Clubhouse is certified by the International Center for Clubhouse Development. This model is based on the philosophy that recovery from serious mental illness must involve the whole person in a vital and culturally sensitive community. A clubhouse community offers respect, hope, mutuality, and unlimited opportunity to access the same worlds of friendship, housing, education, and employment as the rest of society.

The International Standards for Clubhouse Programs define the clubhouse model of rehabilitation. They are at the heart of a Clubhouse's mission to help people with mental illness stay out of hospitals and achieve social, financial, and vocational goals. The Standards serve as a "bill of rights" for members and a code of ethics for staff, board, and administrators.
